While a debate between Jon Stewart and Bill O’Reilly raged over rapper Common‘s White House poetry reading, there is no debating that the poetry conference hosted by President Barack Obama
and First Lady Michelle Obama last week was a success for the ten young members of the group Get Lit/Words Ignite who traveled to Washington from the greater L.A. area!
The teens were humbled and honored by the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with some of America’s greatest living poets such as Elizabeth Alexander, Billy Collins, Rita Dove and Kenneth Goldsmith at a poetry workshop hosted by the first lady.
In addition to President Obama’s speech on the importance of poetry, the Get Lit members toured historic sites in our nation’s capital, and recited versus from a variety of poems.
