Generally, Will Smith can do no wrong. 'Fresh Prince' was '90s gold. 'Miami' is still the party anthem for my hometown. I own 'Independence Day' on DVD.
But I don't think I've read a sentence lately that's made me laugh as hard as the headline to this story: Will Smith and his son, Jaden, will co-star in a sci-fi adventure flick for director M. Night Shyamalan.
It's real, guys. It's really real.
Now, to be clear, Will Smith is a great actor, and Jaden, 12, proved his worth alongside his dad in 'The Pursuit of Happyness,' which made anyone with a soul weep like a baby.
The untitled film stars Jaden as a young boy who navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth 1,000 years in the future to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes, according to a release sent out by Sony today.
It doesn't help matters that Shyamalan's most recent film, 'The Last Airbender,' was a tremendous disaster; poor plotting and a whitewashed cast made the movie flop like a fish on a boat deck. He was a super-nice guy when we interviewed him last year, but that doesn't mean he's still making good movies.
Conversely, the Smiths are box office royalty. Jaden's 2010 remake of 'The Karate Kid' pulled in $350 million worldwide.
How did this matchup even happen? And what on Earth is the final film going to be like? Is it too much to hope for it to end up being 'Independence Day II'?
